The program was modeled upon the successful initial collaborative efforts between Dr. Kirt Gill and VIC Tech. Dr. Gill’s involvement with VIC commenced during his tenure as a medical resident at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) under the mentorship of Dr. Rajiv Chopra. This phase was pivotal in defining his career trajectory. After an introduction to Solenic Medical, a VIC portfolio company, by Dr. Chopra, Dr. Gill began engaging in research roles like those of an intern. Recognizing his potential, he was soon assigned to conduct market research and provide insights into the VIC opportunity assessment pipeline.

His competent handling of various responsibilities—spanning his research at UTSW and market and medical research at Solenic—underscored his maturity and determination. Dr. Gill's seamless adaptation and effectiveness in these roles facilitated his participation in strategic meetings and led to the proposition of his role as a model for the VIC Fellows program. This initiative was formalized in October 2019 when the concept document for the VIC Fellows program was presented to the VIC board. The first job description was drafted in November 2019, culminating in March 2020, with Dr. Gill and 5 other candidates joining the inaugural class of Fellows.

LAF (Live After Fellowship):

After completing an intensive 12-month training period, VIC Fellows are well-equipped to embark on new career trajectories, significantly influenced by the depth and breadth of their Fellowship training. This program enhances their existing skills and opens doors to various strategic roles across the industry. Many of our Fellows find their niche within technology transfer offices, where they apply their refined expertise to facilitate the transition of scientific discoveries from the laboratory to marketable products, ensuring these innovations achieve commercial success and societal impact.

Furthermore, several Fellows rise to prominent leadership roles within their startups or established companies, harnessing their enhanced managerial and technical skills to drive business growth and innovation. Their roles often include critical decision-making responsibilities and oversight of strategic initiatives. For example, Dr. Gill–one of VIC tech’s first Fellows–is now the CEO and co-founder of NeuraStasis, a company focused on treating acute ischemic strokes. 

In addition to leadership, many VIC Fellows also choose to mentor and advise other ventures, spreading their knowledge and experience across the industry and helping to cultivate a new generation of startups. Other fellows are invited to return as a "Senior Fellow." In this elevated role, they take on greater responsibilities within the VIC ecosystem, such as leading significant projects or steering program development strategies, which boosts the ecosystem's productivity and significantly accelerates their professional development and leadership readiness.
